New Necrons

So last night I played an 1,850 point Necron army against a Grey Knights army of equal size.  It was my very first game using the new Necron Codex.  Here are a few of my initial thoughts:

1) Finecast sucks!  The models are wayyyyy tooooo brittle.  The feel is too light, solid plastic would have been better.

2) Tesla vs Gauss - Tesla has great infantry killing ability, but beyond that...I'd stick with Gauss.

Now With More Action!!!!

Today I've made the decision to do more regular updates/postings to my blog.  Over the next few weeks I will focus on postings that really get to what I am doing gaming wise.  The postings will fall into one of the following categories:

Minis - Warhammer 40K
Minis - Dystopian Wars
Minis - Warmachine/Hordes
RPG - D&D: Neverwinter (game I am DM'ing)
RPG - D&D: War of the Burning Sky (game I am DM'ing)
RPG - DeathWatch (game I am DM'ing)
Random Board Games!

I am going to try and share more of my experiences in these areas so that readers can get a feel for what I'm doing around gaming.  The MAIN focus is going to spend more time reflecting on my game experience so that I can get more enjoyment out of my hobby....maybe my readers can to!

Terrain - Buildings

Thanks for the idea Matt.  Here is a revision that includes some debris.  I want to make sure I have enough room to move/place models.

Feedback welcomed!

Terrain - Buildings (2) I made some progress on my buildings.

This building/ruin is completed.  I opted to leave a lot of open space, and was pleased how the glue adhered to the special paint.

Next we have...

For this one, I wanted to add more options for height.  I used pieces from a Terrain set called Platformers...which is TERRIBLE!  At this point, I can only used the sets (like an idiot, I purchased two) as bits.  I have not glued these pieces down to the board yet.  I'll keep you posted.

How I Became a Necron (PART 1)

Although I grew up with Monopoly and various other board games, I began my real path in gaming around 1986, role-playing in Champions and Villains & Vigilantes.  Later, I expanded to miniature and card games.  As I grew (and made more money) I began to expand my gaming.  But I couldn’t get any traction in my miniature – mostly due to a lack of players.   I had always seen people playing 40K, I even had the Battlefleet Gothic Box set (but couldn’t find players).

In the fall of 2002, I went into a game store and said, I want to try out this 40K system….but I don’t want any army that other people are already playing.  The proprietor said…”you’re in luck, Codex Necron just came out!”  I purchased the Codex and starter box, and I was on my way.

After reading the Codex, I thought “I thought, these guys are the bad guys…REALLY bad!  Why would he give me this?”  Since I was reading while I built, my army was almost complete when I made this realization.  Now as I was reading the book, I was carrying it around, and a lot of people were saying “you’re playing Necron, COOL!”  Little did I know, these were the whisperings of the evil C’Tan known as The Deceiver, subtly working his machinations to subvert me to the darkest of dark sides.  At this point, I had a Necron Lord and the contents of 1 army box – total cost about $70 (we had a PAGE discount program even back then)  I was determined to table the army, and just chalk my money spent as The Cost of Doing Business!  But the Deceiver had other plans.

While at PAGE, GM’ing my now legendary Silver Age Sentinels superhero game….in walks Steve Cunliffe (yeah I’m naming names!) with over 2,000 points of built, painted, and based Necron pieces.  He says, “Hey, The Dark Overlord said to give these to you” (or maybe he said “I’m getting rid of these I don’t have the space”).  I took the pieces home, and checked them out.  I had Immortals, Scarabs, Warriors, Destroyers and Lords – A FULL PLAYABLE ARMY/FORCE!!!!!

There were suddenly whispers in my mind…”See what we have provided for you?  Bad is Good.  Join our cause…let the harvest begin!”

NEXT CHAPTER….”A Necron Wraith walks through a wall, and into my heart!”

Terrain - Supplies

Some people have asked what paint I use for basing it is!

I do have some minor issues with the paint - mainly you have to shake the can a lot and fiddle with it to get the paint flowing.  I imagine that's because of the small flecks in the paint.  I originally got the paint for my Necron Monoliths, but after some testing, I was concerned with being able to glue after painting.   I ended up going with a Hammered finish spray paint for the Monoliths (picture below).

Both paints are more expensive the regular spay paint - but about the same cost as Premium (Army Painter) hobby spray paint.  Both are kind of spray and forget.  For example, once I spray the Monoliths, I just have Justin (he has the steady hand) go over the fine lines with a high gloss gold and I'm done!

Warmachine - WRATH!

So, I already have a large Warmachine collection, so I'm thinking about putting together a WRATH level army and setting up a game.  Right now, I'm thinking about using this 100pt, 2 Warcaster list...Army Name: Wrath:

Cygnar: 99+11 points, 44 models
Captain Allister Caine  +5 points
- 2x Hunter  6 points each
- Squire  2 points
Captain Jeremiah Kraye  +6 points
- 2x Charger  4 points each
- 2x Sentinel  4 points each
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages  6 points
- Gun Mage Officer  2 points
- Cyclone  9 points
Tempest Gun Mages  6 points
- Gun Mage Officer  2 points - Cyclone  9 points
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team  4 points
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution  3 points
Gun Mage Captain Adept (x2)  2 points each
Rutger Shaw  2 points
- Vanguard  5 points
Taryn di la Rovissi  2 points
Cavalry Support
Major Katherine Laddermore  5 points
Storm Lances  11 points
Stannis Brocker  4 points
3 Steelhead Heavy Cavalry  6 points

This is definitely a HIGHLY mobile force that would allow me to control large areas of the board as I zip around and try and set up two (2) Assassination Runs on the other two Warcasters (a difficult proposition at best).  If I expand to 125 or 150 points, I'd definitely add more Heavy Warjacks under Kraye, as well as some 'Jack repair capacity (maybe Arlan Strangeways and some Field Mechaniks).

Thoughts/Feedbacks....challengers :>

Terrain - Buildings

I'm working on some terrain boards (special thanks to Tom M. for the boards) using some 40K building pieces I have on hand.  As this project progresses, I'll post more pics.

WOW...I'm here!

Today marks my first assault on the blogosphere (I read that word somewhere in a non-gaming book).  I hope to share my thoughts and projects on various things gaming.

Special thanks to Jason...he showed me the approach route!!!
